Dirt
I took the opportunity, while the ground was slashed open, to get a good look at the ground that I am trying to grow a garden in. As you can see, I'm not really living in Sandy, I'm living in Rocky. Digging in this dirt is impossible!!

I wonder what's preventing it from draining? Is there a large clay component? Or just a caliche? You're at the mouth of a canyon, so that explains all the boulders, but I can't figure out the lack of good drainage.
